Film Restoration
Digitally remastered
2016-18 all films are digitally remastered. The 16mm and 35mm negative reels preserved at the National Archive in Berlin are digitally transferred. Each single film frame is scanned in „high definition“ resolution. The „wet-gate“ technique eliminates scratches and other mechanical damages on the film's surface.
The image steadiness of the partially shrunken negative is digitally compensated ("shake out"). Other signs of ageing (i.e. discoloured film cement on splices) are digitally retouched.
In the next stage all films are color graded and enhanced in contrast ratio. The idea is to still preserve the typical „film look“ of the 1980s.
Also the soundtrack is composed form the best possible sources (i.e. perforated audiotape, broadcast master tapes). Foreign language versions are incorporated.
The final DCP data files and the source media files are stored by the Federal National Archives in Berlin. The Film Museum Duesseldorf adds all archival documents to its collection.
